about

Spencer Jo Calgary, Alberta

Spencer Jo isn't interested in sugarcoating things. In fact, he's spent much of his musical life searching for sour truth and throwing the spotlight onto it. He's been in and out of punk bands since the age of 16, and the winding road has lead him to his current incarnation as a folk artist with a sociopolitical, sometimes surreal, edge that makes his commentary poignant for anyone who listens. ... more

Track Name: Howl
A coyote wails in the dark. And tugs on a heart string with every bark. And you know you could have stayed here awhile, but a restless heart's gotta make that mile. So howl for the pack that you left behind! Howl for the wanderings of a wayward mind! Howl for the girl with the scarlet hair! And howl for the nights that you weren't there! A songbird rings in the dawn. Reminds you of what you've known all along. You can give and you can take, but a restless heart will always break. A coyote wails in the night. And serenades the city lights. And he dances at the river - by the sparkle of the moon - where the air is calm, the wild rose in bloom.
Track Name: Old Lake Under a Willow Tree
There's an old lake under a willow tree. There's an old lake under a willow tree. Won't my baby come down with me? Down to the lake and the willow tree. Won't my baby come down with me? Me, my baby, and the devil makes three. Me and my baby seen better times. Me and my baby seen better times. Lord it's hard, but Lord we tried! Me and my baby can't seem to get by. Lord it's hard, but Lord we tried! Love my baby 'til the day I die. Well, I gave my baby my hand to hold. Said I gave my baby my hand to hold. Starin' at the water, so dark and cold. I feel it runnin' through my bones. Starin' at the water, so dark and cold. Love my baby, let rest her soul. There's an old lake under a willow tree. There's an old lake under a willow tree. Won't you come down, Lord, and bring me peace? Before I lay my head to sleep, come down Lord and bring me peace. Down to the lake and the willow tree.
Track Name: River Union Song
I went to the river for to get me a drink. To take in the air and to have me a think. I took my tribulation and I tossed it in a box. Tossed the box in the water - may it smash upon the rocks. I went to the river for to clear out my head. To skip me some stones, let 'em sink to the bed. But a copper come and grabbed me, and he showed me his fist. Said "This property is private and them privateers is pissed". They took me to the courthouse and the right noble judge, banged a cold hard gavel and he carried him a grudge. I'll stand my ground 'cause I can't stand the law - of the river privateers who'd skin their brothers raw.
Track Name: Prehistoric Ape Man
Prehistoric ape man, listen to the sound of the wind and trees. Hunter-gatherer, listen to the mountain rock. You'll hear your quarry: primordial mountain goat - been tracked for days and days. Wild cat! Sneak attack! Run! run! run! run! run! Don't slip and you'll get away! Primeval wild cat, no supper - it got away. Prehistoric ape man coming up the mountain side. Our hunter becomes prey. Prehistoric ape man, instinct leaves no time for fear. Wild cat! Sneak attack! Listen to the mountain rock. It will guide your spear.
Track Name: Monkey Boy Saves the Day
I could put on a costume and run around. I could fight crime all over town. I can't really fly, but I can swing from trees. Monkey bring burglar to his knees! And maybe, then, I'd be half the man you deserve. There's a villainous Fat Cat who runs these streets. He knows the mayor and he knows the police. The next time I see his sinister face, I could rearrange it- put him in his place. And maybe, then, I'd be three quarters the man you deserve. "Monkey Boy Saves the Day!" That's what the papers would say. There's a bright-eyed kid that follows me. He knows kung fu and he's quick on his feet. The Rookie and me, we make a good team. I don't need a sidekick but I think I see that, maybe, he could be the man you deserve.
Track Name: Night of the Beast
I'm awake! I'm awake in the middle of the night. My heart belongs to the city lights. The moon up above calls my name, and I can't wait to play our game. The hairs on my neck, they stand on end. I feel the call of The Hunt again. Blood flows hot and the wind blows cold. The animal is taking hold. The city - she's my wild - and I'm her beast. I live for nights like these! I leap from the roof, I swing from trees. Ain't no wall got nothin' on me. I track the scent of blood and wine. And, sure enough, I'm right on time. She runs out the the club; he's close behind. His boys at the door don't pay no mind. It ends in an alley, back to the wall. A cry in the night - that's my call! I killed him there, I killed him dead. I tore him apart. Smashed his head. She screams at the blood, screams at the sight. And I slip back into the night. I track the scent of blood and wine, by fire escape and power line. I fight with fist, tooth, and claw. On nights like these, I'm the law!
